Onyeche Oche

Graduate Student Senate (Bio & Med)
Biography

Hello! I am Onyeche Oche, a 3rd year PhD student in the College of Pharmacy, specializing in Health Services Research. My research interests are varied and include social justice, health equity, health care access for vulnerable populations, process improvement, and implementation science. I am also a licensed Pharmacist with licenses spanning states as far as Alaska and as close as Wisconsin.

I arrived in Iowa City in December 2019, after obtaining an MBA degree in Health Care Administration in Cleveland, Ohio, and working for 5 years in the corporate sector. As an international student who has attended school and worked in the United States, I am not only aware of the myriad of challenges international students face in school and work environments, but I am passionate about drawing attention to these issues and advocating for change.

Advocacy led me to become the Chair of the International Student Committee in the Graduate Student Senate (GSS), where I work with other committee members to come up with programs that are beneficial to international students. One thing that would be beneficial, based on my experience, is a job fair where local employers can hire international students who love Iowa City and would like to settle down here. This will not only encourage more international students to come to Iowa City but will contribute to talent retention in the area.

Some of the other responsibilities that I have on campus include serving as the International Student Advisory Board (ISAB) graduate board secretary - leading the recruitment and selection effort of new members and overseeing the compilation of an annual report for ISAB accomplishments; voting on issues affecting graduate and professional students as a GSS delegate to the GPSG; and scoring student grant applications as a GPSG grant reviewer. I am also a member of the Graduate Council, and serve on the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) committee of the College of Pharmacy.

In my free time, I enjoy taking long walks at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area and other parks in Iowa City.
