Grants for students

GPSG provides grants for individual graduate and professional students enrolled at the University of Iowa. Students may use grant money to travel, conduct research, or conduct a service project. While we do not place specific restrictions on the types of research, travel, or service that we will fund, successful applicants should be able to make a strong case for how their proposed research, service, or travel will contribute to their educational and/or professional success.

Please note: We have completed all grant cycles for this academic year, and are currently doing site maintenance to prepare for next year. To help facilitate this maintenance, we have locked the system - you will not be able to start, edit, or submit applications for the time being. Please check back later if you wish to start an application or edit an existing application. Note: we will not review any applications submitted over the summer until our review cycles begin again in September, 2014.

If you have questions regarding the GPSG Grant Program, please email GPSG-grants@uiowa.edu.

For technical assistance with the application system, please email our system manager.

What can I use GPSG Grant funds for?

  1. Research: the GPSG Grant will fund up to $1500 for expenses related to research projects. While we do not restrict research funding to dissertation projects, successful research proposals reflect a carefully crafted and feasible research plan. Recipients of grants for research have one calendar year to use awarded funds.
  2. Travel: the GPSG Grant will fund up to $400 for travel to conferences and workshops. You need not present a paper or project to receive funding, however, those not presenting should take additional care to identify the significance of conference attendance for your professional development. Successful applications make a strong case for the significance of attending the conference or workshop and do not rely on financial need alone to justify the request.
  3. Service: the GPSG Grant will fund up to $1000 for expenses related to a service project. While only graduate and professional students may apply for and receive GPSG Grant funds, applicants may partner with other students to complete their service project. Priority will be given to projects having some tangible impact on the University of Iowa community. Successful applicants will demonstrate the importance of their service project and its connection with the UI community. Recipients of grants for service have one calendar year to use awarded funds.

2014-2015 Grant Deadlines

In order to provide for timely review of applications, GPSG has set the following grant review cycles for the 2014-2015 academic year (note: these deadlines are subject to change at any time):

Cycle Deadline (all: 11:59pm)
Cycle 1 September 12, 2014
Cycle 2 October 17, 2014
Cycle 3 November 14, 2014
Cycle 4 January 16, 2015
Cycle 5 February 13, 2015
Cycle 6 March 13, 2015
Cycle 7 April 17, 2015

It is our goal to alert applicants of final award decisions within 3 weeks of the deadline, but we cannot guarantee adherence to this timeline.

Cycle deadlines apply to all grant types (e.g., service, travel, research). Activities for which you are seeking grant funds need not fall within the cycle during which you apply, however, program rules require that funds for travel be claimed within 60 days of returning from travel.

There are two exceptions to the 60-day deadline: travelers returning between July 1 and September 1 have 120 days to claim awarded funds, and travelers returning between December 1 and December 30 have 90 days to claim awarded funds. Deadline exceptions may be granted under exceptional circumstances.

Please note: GPSG observes a standard fiscal year that runs from July 1 to the following June 30. Travel grant recipients must claim reimbursement during the same fiscal year the grant was awarded. Therefore, students traveling between July 1 and the start of the fall semester should wait to apply for travel funds until the fall semester after they return.
