As we begin the new academic year, the GPSG International Affairs Committee is committed to helping international graduate and professional students stay informed, connected, and prepared. Below are two timely resources for the University of Iowa international community.

DHS Immigration Update for F-1 & J-1 Students and Scholars

A recent webinar by the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) provides information about the new final rule from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026, affecting how F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors are admitted to and maintain status in the United States.

The webinar addresses several important changes, including:

  • The new “admit until” date
  • Requirements related to program extensions
  • Changes involving educational objectives
  • Implications for current and future F-1 and J-1 students and scholars

The GPSG International Affairs Committee is partnering with International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) and the Graduate College to offer an interactive financial readiness workshop designed for international graduate and professional students.

Through group activities and conversation, participants will explore expenses they may encounter throughout their Iowa journey and learn practical strategies for:

  • Anticipating expenses
  • Budgeting effectively
  • Planning ahead
  • Making informed financial decisions
  • Building greater financial confidence
