Aurora Borealis: The Physics of Nature’s Light Show

Aurora Borealis: The Physics of Nature’s Light Show promotional image

Join us for an exploration of the science behind the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. Professor Allison Jaynes will guide us through the physics that causes the sky to glow with vibrant colors—from solar winds and magnetic fields to atmospheric interactions. She will be joined by a panel of University of Iowa graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, Lily Daneshmand, Dr. Shannon Hill, Jodie McLennan, Andy Minot, and Jessica Mondoskin, who will share insights from their own research on this amazing phenomenon.

Come learn what makes the sky light up—and how scientists study these dazzling displays.

Aurora-themed refreshments will be served.
