Joyce McIntosh of the Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF) will explore intellectual freedom through legal frameworks and the library profession’s Code of Ethics. McIntosh will outline libraries’ legal obligations under the First Amendment and related laws, and the session offers guidance on developing policies and procedures that protect users’ rights and ensure lawful, equitable service. Founded in 1969, the FTRF defends First Amendment rights through education, litigation, and advocacy, supporting librarians facing intellectual freedom challenges.

The Stoflet Lectureship is supported by a fund established by the late Dr. Arthur Benton in memory of Ada M. Stoflet (1909–1976), who served as an exceptionally dedicated member of the University of Iowa Libraries staff for more than three decades. The event is designed to bring outstanding lecturers in librarianship and related issues to campus.
