Cluster Properties in Relativistic Quantum Theories of Particles

Professor Wayne Polyzou

Steven Weinberg, in his book on quantum field theory (The Quantum Theory of Fields I) suggests that cluster properties is the reason for using local field theories to formulate relativistically invariant quantum theories. I will use the example of two interacting particles in a three-particle system to illustrate how cluster properties fail to be satisfied and discuss a method, due to Sokolov (S. N. Sokolov, Dokl. Akad. Nauk USSR. 233, 575 (1977) [Sov. Phys. Dokl. 22, 198 (1977)]) , that can be used to restore cluster properties. I will also discuss some interesting questions in operator algebras that arise from Sokolov's construction.
