Late Spring Bird Banding I

Late Spring Bird Banding I promotional image

Come join us at Macbride Nature Recreation Area for a morning of bird banding as migratory birds travel through Iowa. We will begin at the Falcon Shelter where we will embark on a short hike to the migration station to set up our mist nets which will help us secure birds for banding. Led by our federally and state licensed bird bander, you will be guided through the banding process and learn how to recognize and record the data collected for each bird we band. We will discuss how and why we band birds as well as the legal aspects of bird banding. In addition, you will learn how to safely hold and release banded birds, as well as how to identify the species that are returning from their wintering grounds. Limited space is available.

Cost is $50 for adults, $30 for students.

Activity Level: Easy
This is an outdoor program, so please dress for the weather. You are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear and be prepared for a short, easy-paced hike on uneven terrain to the migration station. Expect the ground to be soft and muddy due to seasonal conditions.
