Join Bur Oak Land Trust and University of Iowa Main Library Gallery exhibit curators Collin Vandewalle and Lindsay Moen for a free migratory bird hike at Corriell Nature Preserve.

Celebrate the legacy of Jay N. “Ding” Darling while learning about local conservation efforts, getting outside, and observing birds as they begin their southern migration.

Corriell Nature Preserve is one of Bur Oak Land Trust's most biologically diverse preserves. In addition to the sand prairie with native cactus and an oak savanna, Corriell boasts an impressive oxbow wetland, beaver dam and sedge meadow. Birds of all kinds call Corriell home, including shorebirds and migrating birds that travel the Mississippi Flyway.

Things to know: The preserve is located about 25 miles east of Iowa City in Muscatine County and is only accessible to the public through events or by permission. Be prepared to walk a couple of miles, bring your own water, and pack out whatever you bring in.

Pre-registration is required through Bur Oak Land Trust. Space is limited. Guests will need to provide their own transportation to and from the preserve.

About the Main Library Gallery exhibit: A Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for The Des Moines Register, Jay N. “Ding” Darling (1876–1962) was also one of the nation’s most influential figures in the American conservation movement. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of his birth, It’s Been Wonderful Knowing You: Wildlife Conservation and Advocacy Through the Lens of Jay N. “Ding” Darling explores the transformation of Iowa’s environmental landscape during Darling’s life and his contributions to environmental and wildlife conservation advocacy nationwide. Open daily through Dec. 18.
