We are currently looking for graduate and doctoral students who are interested in civic engagement in their studies to apply to be fellows for this year’s Obermann Graduate Institute.

To learn more about the Graduate Institute, there will be an informational session this Thursday, Sept. 17, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm at the Obermann Center, 111 Church Street:  http://obermann.uiowa.edu/events/graduate-institute-information-session

To view the application, which is due OCTOBER 13, go to:  http://obermann.uiowa.edu/programs/graduate-institute-engagement-and-academy#!apply

Every January, 15-18 graduate students meet for an intensive week of conversation, study and exploration. Although they come from a variety of departments, they share an interest in how civic engagement can enhance teaching, research, and creative work. As the graduate school experience has become more and more discipline focused, the Institute provides a rare opportunity for students to connect with colleagues from across campus.

The culminating event of the Institute is for students to create or expand their own project. Projects have included choreographing personal narratives with incarcerated girls, collecting stories of changing demographics of Iowa City to creating and curating exhibits of art by sexual assault survivors.

The outcomes are clear: the Institute helps students secure jobs, funding and partnerships in the tough career environment post graduation.

If you would be so kind as to share this and the attached PDF with interested graduate students I would be extremely appreciative! Also, if any students have questions, please have them email me at jessica-pleyel@uiowa.edu
