Earlier today the University of Iowa Police Department issued a Crime Alert after learning one of our students reported a racially motivated attack. We are saddened and outraged by the horrible event that transpired Saturday evening. This kind of violence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Hawkeyes intervene in uncomfortable or potentially violent situations.   We all can do something to prevent sexual assault.   Direct.   Approach the situation.   Distract.   Create a distraction.   Delegate.   Ask others for assistance to intervene.   It’s on us to step in and speak up.

Hawkeyes recognize that non-consensual sex is sexual assault.   Consent is freely and affirmatively given.   If someone doesn’t or can’t consent to sex, it’s rape.    It’s on us to obtain consent and look out for someone who cannot consent.
